Container Gardening

by Donna Evans

Want to extend your gardening season? Limited on space you can devote to gardening? Then container gardening is the answer! Even a small patio or balcony can be used as an area for container plantings.

Planters come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. You can pick any type of container that strikes your fancy, just be sure that the container is large enough to support full size plants and has adequate drainage holes in the bottom of the container. If plants are grown in containers without good drainage they are likely to become waterlogged and have root rot.

Use a good potting soil mix that contains plenty of organic material. Some of the soil mixes out contain moisture beads that will help decrease the amount of watering required. Fill the container approximately four-fifths full of soil. A little more soil may be necessary after planting.

You are not limited on the types of plants that can be grown in containers; annuals and perennial flower plants as well as vegetable plants can be grown in containers. Or you can even mix flowers with vegetables. Check around your local garden center for smaller varieties of tomatoes, peppers or even lettuce for your container garden. There are numerous flower varieties out now that are specifically geared for container gardens.

When the weather gets cooler and the nighttime temperatures go below freezing, bring your containers into the house or garage overnight. If you have a sunny window try bringing in planters of petunias, impatiens or herbs and keeping them throughout the winter months.
